Last post before the big run

So, it's been a fun week, had my last BMF class on Tuesday - throwing each other across the park like cannonballs - only lead to one small bruise....

Other than that I've been busy being in denial and eating carbs

Right now I should packing for the trip to Edinburgh, but so far all I've managed to get together is some water and 4 apples, Time Out and Runners World - not really enough to run a marathon with!!

Probably ought to get on, I'm nervous about the run - going up by myself is a bit scary, but with a few 1000 others I won't be alone!

No email until I've left Edinburgh, so this is it for a while - have set myself a target time for 4hr30mins, so keep your fingers crossed and all forms of rain dance would be appreciated - it looks like it's going to be a warm one

My last Sunday Run

before the big one that is!

Sunday dawned bright and sunny and HOT, so naturally we waited until the warmest part of the day before venturing out for a run.....

Out up Vincent Drive (past the massive new hospital) and along the canal to Five Ways - it was a good run, but Ewan is faster than me, so keeping up was an effort especially in the heat, but we made it there and back in good time - the incentive of left over Thai takeaway was a good one!!

Managed to get my name ironed onto my vest while watching some of Police Academy 3 - still a classic film and when I got back to London discovefred that my number had arrived - 7732 - which, according to my friend Charlotte, is lucky in Vietnam - that's good enough for me!

So now just 2 more runs and one BMF class and that's me ready for a marathon.......

Birmingham BMF

Is not as hard as Finsbury Park's - up in Brum for the weekend and ventured to Cannon Hill Park for BMF today. Popped on my usual red bib and off we went - I finished the class an hour later full of beans and not at all that tired - either I'm having an amazingly fit day or it was an easier class - I think the fact we walked (??!!!) in the warm up should have been some indication.....

To commiserate for a disappointing morning we went for brunch in the Selly Sausage and I'm happy to report that the bacon and maple syrup pancakes are still as amazing as ever - wouldn't recommend the poached eggs though

Going to iron my name onto my running vest later and fingers crossed my number will have arrived by the time I make it back to London - it's meant to get there today

Friday 22 May 2009

BMF countdown and off to Brum

I did my last Thursday BMF class last night - only Saturday's in Birmingham and then Tuesday in Finsbury Park and then none until I've recovered from the marathon - I'm going to miss them

Was a beautiful evening, lots of running up and down the hills (well, slopes) squirrels bounding around and the sun shining on the trees as it set......

Am off to Birmingham for the weekend - not too sure if we have an iron in the house, so have got my running vest to iron my name on to. Looking forward to BMF, a trip to the Selly Sausage for lunch, thai takeaway and a run round Sutton Park and my last alcoholic drink before the big day!

Confidence slowly coming back

Went for a good run around Regents Park yesterday - only 4 miles but it felt good - was so busy running I forgot to look out for the giraffes!

Can now count the runs I have left on one hand - it's getting a bit scary!

Wednesday 20 May 2009

I was a green!!!!

I'm either getting fitter or crazier or a little bit of both.

Last night at BMF there weren't many greens (the super fit crazy group) so when this happens they tend to split the quicker reds (the middle fit but not crazy group) off to make up the numbers. I found myself just outside the cut off but the instructor asked me if I wanted to go up a group and for some reason I found myself saying yes....

OMG the difference between the groups was crazy - faster running and no breaks at all, not that we have big breaks in the reds but at least a little rest between exercises - not so in the greens

I have never been so close to being sick from exercise, but it was fun and I got through it and am starting to wonder if I might try it again on Thursday..........

Half breathing a sigh of relief.......

Didn't get into the NYC marathon - am on one hand relieved as I'm still worrying about Edinburgh and the thought of doing another one this year is a little daunting, but on the other hand I am a little disappointed - would be really great to go over and run around New York

Only have to apply for another 2 years and then get guaranteed entry, so by 2012 I'll definitely be doing it!!

Still have to wait for September/October to hear about London, so something to look forward to!

Monday 18 May 2009

A much better start to the week

So after the disaster that was the weekend, last week started much more promisingly

Had some good runs - went out twice from work - a record for us - even managed to remember to try out my CRUK running vest and take a photo!!

Missed Tuesday's BMF as busy with Relay stuff, but had a great session on Thursday.

Unfortunately Friday dawned with the beginnings of yet another cold, went to BMF on Saturday and struggled through trying to breathe and by Sunday morning even thinking about a run was a big no, so no long run this weekend, but lots of oranges were consumed

Starting to feel a little worried about Edinburgh now, but up until last weekend my training had been going much better than last year, so I'm hoping this week and a trip to Birmingham for my last 'long' run will bring my confidence back and then all that will be left is next week and the final countdown!!

Sunday 10 May 2009

A good nights sleep

Have woken up (too early for my liking - but Suppose I ought to go work!) feeling much better

The sun burn I forgot to mention yesterday has calmed down to a less red shade of brown and a chat with a good friend has put a new perspective on things - nothing like a cup of tea and sympathy!

Today's run - not a good one

So, we were in Norfolk this weekend for my Dad's 60th Birthday. Thought I'd worked out a nice easy route from where we were staying (near Wells-next-the-sea) to Cromer - 20miles, 1 road, not even I could get lost doing that - but as it turned out I could have got killed - the road was a little dodgy, so after much studying of the OS maps a new one was worked out

I set off following the same initial route as Saturday's quick trot out but even before I'd reached 2 miles I wasn't feeling great, my legs were sluggish, I was breathing really wheezily (something I'm prone to do towards the end of a race when I know I'm close to finishing and get a bit over emotional) and was just having a horrible time of it

I got to 5 miles where Dad met me with a drink (it was all country roads so to save me carrying shed loads of water/lucozade he was my mobile drinks station!), he was met with a daughter ready to give up and go home, but after a quick chat and a change of route we set off together to make sure I took the right road (I was all set to follow a different one so it's a good job he came with me!!)

After an initial feeling of renewed positivity the wheeziness was back - just couldn't control my breathing - the route was hilly but my legs coped surprisingly well with them, but as I turned into the last 3 miles before seeing my dad (and potentially mum, sister, her boyfriend and 3 dogs) I was already thinking of giving up - thankfully a mixture of wise words from Leigh and the last marathon and some very kind words from someone who will remain nameless I got though the next few miles up hill through a country estate and was rewarded with a lovley downhill run past the house and the home straight to my next pit stop

It was here that I decided to quit while I was ahead - there was no way I was going to be able to happily finish another 9 miles - they were only going to leave me feeling more demoralised than I already was. I've never given up that far from home before and I hope I'll never have to again, I'm putting it down to it just not being a good day - if it happened on a day when I only had to run 3 miles then I wouldn't be worrying about it, but as it turns out this time it was on a Sunday - big run so a bad day.

Now I have to put my mind to the next 3 weeks, tapering and trying to put today behind me.

There are plans to go running with Clare and Jenny at work, it will be fun to run with some people, that and a couple of BMF classes should hopefully get me all fired up and ready for this Sunday's 13 miles - we're nearly there!

This last week

So last Sunday's run was long and hard hard work - not really enjoying these longer runs as much as I hoped I would - this time last year I was still coming back from being injured so never even ran this far before the marathon and these longer distances are proving to be mentally very hard I think my legs can do it if only my mind would push me through

The rest of the week was interesting - a trip to the physio on Tuesday proved to put an end to more running - some leg presses and then a BMF class left my quads in agony until Saturday when I went out for a quick 4 mile run to see how they fared - pretty well as it turned out - according to Sally Gunnel I put in my fastest ever mile!

I then treated myself to a long stretch in the sunshine of Norfolk - my favorite part of exercising!

Saturday 2 May 2009

My route for tomorrow

4 parks (and a hill), 20miles and I suspect 1 very tired Emma

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2784735

anyone want to come along?? please??

if you don't want to join me on my run, would you sponsor me instead??
http://www.donatetomyrelay.org/emmarossruns

hopefully see you tomorrow though!!

The rest of the week

After recovering from Marathon day, the week has been spent with the usual round of runs and BMF.

Slightly concerned that my knees are getting increasingly sore after my longer runs - have just discovered that I'm out of ibuprofen - a shopping trip to stock up is needed.

Fingers crossed that they behave themselves through the next 2 weeks of mega runs.......

A couple of crazy things have happened this week

Firstly - late on Monday night I signed up for next year's London Marathon - the first ever Virgin London Marathon - and after Sunday how could I resist?!

Secondly - I got a text yesterday afternoon from Brum telling me that they - Ewan and Leigh -had entered the ballot for the New York Marathon - I've always fancied doing this and so there's no way they were going to enter and I wasn't

So now I have to wait for October to hear about London and 2 weeks to hear about NY..... exciting, but NY is on 1st November of this year - not something I was expecting to be doing in 6 months time, but what are the chances of getting in?????!!

Last Saturday and the weekend

The last week has been a little crazy.

Saturday dawned wet and early - I dragged myself out of bed at 7am to go and get some breakfast ready for the day's run - no BMF for me, instead a nice 18 mile/3 hour run was the order of the day. Sunday's run was brought forward a day to allow for my supporter duties.

The run was my usual route down to the river but going via Primrose Hill before heading to Kings Cross to add the extra mileage. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2761219

My travel round London have me discovering I've been running past major landmarks without me even noticing and Saturday's run was no different. I spent a long time last year running past St Paul's without seeing it and this time I realised I was running even closer to it - in fact I was only a small flight of stairs away from it. So, always happy to change to route to distract myself I went for a small run around St Paul's before heading off through 'The City' past The Monument via Bank underground and on to Tower Bridge doing a little bit of the marathon route in reverse - don't think running across Tower Bridge will ever fail to excite me - such amazing views, could just do with fewer tourists

So I managed to get myself round the 18miles - the last 3 were a struggle, but it is the most boring part of the route - a long straight road home - but so far not found a more interesting way

Then it was time for a shower and headed out for lunch - pancakes with bacon and maple syrup and coffee at my most favorite cafe round the corner from my house

It was here that I met Ewan - one of my friends, the other being Leigh, running the London Marathon the next day.

The rest of the weekend was turned over to them and the London Marathon - they both ran amazing times in very hot weather -so proud of them both for all that they have achieved

Friday 24 April 2009

I almost forgot

I came to a sad decision yesterday - it's time to send some of my running shoes to trainer heaven.

I currently own 7 pairs.......

The 2 snazzy new pairs that I've recently bought to take me through to the marathon

2 pairs from last year's marathon that are now too old for running on the road

1 pair I bought, ran a Half in Bath, got injured and decided they were bad for my feet - totally irrational as it turns out - they're the same as the ones I'm now running in, but it appears I'm superstitious about them and will only use them as post-run trainers!!

Finally the 2 that have been with me through miles of road running and then a tough Winter of BMF. One pair came from Canada and the other from Sutton. They did my first ever races with me - Cure Leukaemia 5km, Great Manchester 10km and the Great North Run. This Winter they've been soaked in water and caked in mud and generally abused - they waded through the stream at the Suicide 6ish - were nearly thrown away then, but I couldn't quite bring myself to do it

But I think it's time to say goodbye to them....... a sad day.........but they've served me well

Thursday - sunny and fun

Yesterday was a great day.

Beautiful and sunny, the promise of rain for the weekend and I met with one of my friends running London on Sunday for a donut!

Leigh had come down to London to go to the marathon exhibition and collect his running number (and the all important goody bag). It was so good to see him looking really well and full of excitement for his second marathon outing - he says his last, but we shall see......

In the evening it was time for more BMF - still can't get used to the light evenings, so much nicer - the dark, cold, wet Winter seems a long time ago now.

Having a rest day on Friday in preparation for my long run on Saturday (instead of Sunday so I can go watch the marathon!). I am meeting my friend Ewan and going to the marathon exhibition with him - an exciting morning out, looking forward to driving the DLR!!

Wednesday - Finally calibrated??

Had a great run round Regents Park with Clare and Jenny - was quite warm and the park was full of people - a bit of a change from last week when it was empty - something to do with the torrential downpour we were running in.......

Think I've finally managed to calibrate my Nike+ it and my Garmin were pretty much in agreement over the distance

The men in the cafe over the road now ask if we want 'our usual' on a Wednesday - special pasta - still can't help themselves laughing as we tumble sweating into the shop though.........

Tuesday 21 April 2009

More sunny BMF

Tuesday already! And the weather is looking a little too good for my liking

I have 3 friends running the London Marathon on Sunday and I'm hoping things cool down a bit before then or at least one of them will be a sunburned wreck by the end. Does mean my training schedule is messed around a bit this week as I need to get my long run in on Saturday rather than Sunday (which will be taken up with supporting my friends) definitely 18miles this time, so more tweaking of the route is needed...

For me though today meant another great class in the sunshine. My knees are still a little sore, but they're doing ok.

I have discovered I can't leapfrog - don't really remember doing it when I was younger and certainly can't now - I was mocked by the instructors, which I think was a little cruel, but battled on through I'm not sure how leapfrogging can help in a military setting, but didn't think it was the time to ask

Tried the Chinese Truck for lunch today - can highly recommend the duck noodles, and the Singapore ones are apparently just as good. Went to a nice pub yesterday before going to see Ricky - College Arms on Store Street - and does student discount

Sunday - hot and long and busy

So Sunday dawned around 11am - great to catch up on some sleep, but not so good considering my planned route involved the South Bank

Sat trying to stretch an old route to 18miles I had the urge to check my running schedule and discovered that this weekend's long run only had to be 15miles, so that cheered me up no end!!

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2750814

Didn't set off until 2pm as I had some food and had the obligatory faff around before heading out - was rather warm, but armed with money for water and my ipod - still not calibrated properly as it turns out - and Mr Garmin - all was looking ok

The run down to the river was great, as ever it was busy crossing Tower Bridge - they seemed to be putting the scaffolding up for next week's marathon as I ran over - the South Bank wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be for such a sunny afternoon, but it was busy and at some points you just had to walk behind streams of tourists.......

Got over Waterloo Bridge and stopped at my usual newsagents for some more water and the last stretch for home. Had done just over 10miles and was feeling pretty good. The run up to and past Euston is fairly uninspiring and then on to Kentish Town and it was here that my knees really started to hurt and I was tired - only 2 miles to go and I didn't want to do any more

But I made myself a deal, get to the yummy cake/coffee shop just down the road from my house and I could pop in there for a treat.

So, painfully and slowly I made my way towards the sugary delights I hoped were waiting for me. I arrived, was very good - stretched?! before going in only to discover there were no cakes left in the cooler..... but the coffee is fab so ordered one to take away

Got home, passed the mirror in out hallway only to catch a glimpse of myself - a crazed, sweaty, salt-encrusted mess - I thanked everything that is good in the world that there was no cake left - otherwise I'd be sat in there amongst members of the public looking like that!!

It was a long hard run mentally, and my knees suffered too - rest and ibuprofen is on the cards I think

Thankfully Monday is a rest day..... and we're off to see Ricky Gervais!

Saturday BMF - fun in the sun

Saturday was yet another sunny day - the Saturday classes always seem to have good weather - loads of people there, so as ever lots of running around and having fun

The afternoon was devoted to getting ready to go and represent Relay at a Ladies Night in Uxbridge. After a minor dress disaster, a haircut and a fun tube journey, I got to Uxbridge and we arrived with moments to spare

The masons were holding the dinner to raise money for our Relay and another Charity so all we had to do was smile sweetly and try and explain Relay to people - we were pretty good at it by the end of the evening, although we may have agreed to cycle from London to Brighton if the people we were sat with at dinner enter a team in our Relay......

I was almost persuaded to be naughty and stay over with my friends, but was good and left in plenty of time to catch the tube home. Unfortunately to tubes weren't running according to their advertised plan so I seemed to be catching the last tube home, but with a small dash through Kings Cross got the last Piccadilly line tube back and was home for a rather unrespectable 1:40am - not a good time considering the run on Sunday morning......

Thursday 16 April 2009

The wettest run this year........

We're pretty hardcore in the Windeyer Institute.

The wettest day we've had in a while and me and my intrepid labmates decided it was time for a run (well, it was either that or do some work). After standing a few minutes under the canopy at the entrance to the building and getting asked by a couple of bemused people if we were 'going for a run in that' we set off round the park - our little 3 mile route

No sign of secret service squirrel today - too wet even for him

We got about halfway round before we decided we couldn't get any wetter and then it decided to, what felt like stop raining. In fact it only eased off, just it had been so hard it felt like it had stopped!

We very soggily and to much amusement of the staff went across the road from work for lunch - special pasta - always best on a Wednesday, but pretty good on a Thursday too - Macchiatos this would be. Ishta's is better for sandwiches though (unless you want a Reuben....)

Rest day tomorrow - can't wait - will give my kit some time to dry out - my shoes stepped in quite a few puddles today

Niketown on a Wednesday!

It was a fun run yesterday. The Niketown run was moved to a Wednesday due to the bank holiday, so I decided I'd go for the 7 mile run rather than my usual Monday night 4miles - so 2 loops rather than just one round Regent's Park.

We were joined by Jo Pavey who won the Manchester 10km the year I did it. Now pregnant she's not running so far, so only did the 4 mile loop - she did overtake me twice though!! The first time as we set off before they did and the second time as she'd ducked behind some bushes to have a wee......

The lovely lady stayed on to cheer us 7 milers on on our second loop which was great (especially as I was thinking about wimping out and heading back early.....I hate doing loops)

Despite tying to re-recalibrate my Nike+ it told me I did a run of 6 miles in 1:00:06 - not a great time - but as the route is 7 miles I'm pretty chuffed with myself and need to work out once and for all if the park is shrinking as I run round it or if the chip still isn't calibrated correctly......

Randomly bumped into someone else who ran at Reading when I got back into Niketown and it turns out she spotted me there but didn't say hello - even more randomly we work on different floors in the same building - not that I could have told you that before she pointed it out!

After a nice natter with the other 7milers (far more social bunch than the 4mile runners) I sweatily caught the tube home in time for the Apprentice - a great day indeed

Wednesday 15 April 2009

Hose was hard and lessons learnt

Sunday now seems a long time ago, but my legs still seem to be remembering it!!

The day was overcast with the promise of rain - the usual dilemma over what to wear was had, but in the end I went for the trusty short sleeve long leg option.

The run itself was very different to that in Reading, almost no supporters on the route, only water to drink, and the run was on undulating country lanes in the middle of no where - or the Vale of Belvoir to be a little more precise - and it rained!

I found it really hard going, instead of the miles falling away they seemed to go on forever. They had mile and half mile markers which I don't think helped, especially towards the end - knowing you've got to 12 miles is great, but then seeing you're only at 12 1/2 miles is quite demoralising

When we got to Hose I discovered that my Garmin (GPS thingy I can use to check my pace) had a low battery - you'd have thought I'd have learnt after Reading - but no! So Sunday's lesson was - when it says low battery, you have something between 8-9miles of life left in it! Unlike the Nike+ not enough for a half marathon!!

It was around this point that I really started to struggle - I checked my Garmin half way up a hill to check that my pace wasn't as slow as I felt it was only to discover a blank screen - had to give myself a bit of a pep talk to keep me going - I felt like giving up and walking and that would have been fatal as there was still a long way to go

Getting to mile 10 was the highlight - into double figures and only 3 miles to go - a walk in the park distance wise!! Here we had to run past some travellers - at the start we'd been warned they had dogs, but were reassured that they would be chained up - we approached their caravans but there were no dogs in sight just some friendly looking ponies having their breakfast wondering what on earth was going on - almost disappointing!

From there is was 3 long miles via mile 11 and the last water station - felt miraculously better after my last cup of water - like having a whole new pair of legs - then realised it was because I was running down a gentle slope - but it cheered me up enough to get to mile 12, hideous mile 12 1/2 and then spotted the finish - saw my dad peeping out from the top of the hedge - time for a quick photo and then a race to the finish - I managed to overtake someone on the final corner, got my name called out by the commentator man and then saw the clock - 1:58:something - I knew I'd got a new PB, but no idea by how much - had to wait until I got home to find that out

A very nice man cut my chip off, went and picked up my memento (no medal this time), had a lovely stretch and it was time to head home via Tesco Express for some bacon and floury baps

By the time we were back the results were up - 1:58:16 - so 1min 7sec faster than Reading!!

2 of my lovely friends have offered me and extra £70 in total if I can get my half time down to 1:50 by the end of the year - seems a little unlikely now, but fingers crossed I can make it (especially as I did get easter eggs)

http://www.donatetomyrelay.org/emmarossruns

Oh, and my Nike+ isn't calibrated right - it thinks I only did 11 miles - certainly untrue......

Friday 10 April 2009

Nike+ recalibrated - hopefully......

So, was sneaky this morning and went with my dad to his 'country club' and snuck into the gym

Ran a mile, so it should all be calibrated, but time will tell.....

Talking of time, I also managed to leave my watch behind, so poor dad has had to phone as I wasn't meant to be there, and see if it had been found - sure enough it's there - and it's a good job I don't wear a girly pink one or people would start talking!

Any way, have finally got my running number for Sunday and a very snazzy chip which will no doubt cause me a lot of confusion on the day - it attaches to the shoe with some twisty wire things - may well be a Saturday night job!!

So that's me done until Sunday morning, 10am, so no need to be up quite as early as for Reading......

Thursday 9 April 2009

Where did the sunshine go??

Hee hee, it's been the first day of the Easter holidays here in London Town, but sadly no sun and even a bit of drizzle - not good for a holiday, but bodes a little better for the run on Sunday

Yesterday I had a really nice run with Clare and Jenny round Regents Park in the sunshine. No celeb spots, but we did see some herons.......

Have now got a new Nike+ sensor, and no offence to the girls, but I think it needs calibrating. All of a sudden our run was a mile longer and we were running a whole minute/mile faster than normal - seems unlikely in the space of a week that we've sped up that much and even less likely that the park has grown!!

I was hoping to do no more running before Sunday, but think I'll have to sneak on a treadmill and get it calibrated a little better, otherwise I could be setting all kind of new records!!

Had my BMF class tonight - finally managed to bump into the other Emma who ran Reading - I think she suffered as much as I did after the run, so I feel a little better about my seemingly excessive tiredness. Was a great class, only 12 of us reds, so lots of games and general fun - monkey running and leopard crawls....... will miss it on Saturday

So, only 3 more sleeps to Hose, let's hope they're good ones I'm feeling tired and that's never a good thing to be

Tuesday 7 April 2009

I love the light evenings!

What a good day it's been.

Got a seat on the 29 - always a good start to the day!! It's a bendy bus and usually really busy, but timed it just right this morning, so got to sit and read this month's Runners World and their yummy sounding carb filled meal ideas - may well be trying one this weekend - will report back

As it's Tuesday it's BMF night. Had a really good class, the time flew by, lots of abs, lots of legs and lots of sprinting - think this is why my times are getting quicker - I never run that fast when I'm by myself! My partner in BMF crime and I are making chips and beer plans for after Easter - a reward for working so hard - we seem to talk about chips a lot during training - makes the time go faster..... The lighter evenings means we're drawing a lot of onlookers now - think we must make good entertainment, we even had a couple of dogs join in tonight

Going for another run tomorrow at lunch time, then maybe one more on Friday and then it's Hose on Sunday - which will mean a total of one marathon down and only 2 to go!

www.donatetomyrelay.org/emmarossruns

Apparently I'm not getting any Easter eggs this year - so perhaps the money that would have gone on them could go towards my total for Relay?? Mum - any thoughts??

Monday 6 April 2009

New trainers and almost time for Hose

My new trainers have arrived - after complaining to the Mizuno man that they didn't do very snazzy trainers he came up with these ones - they'll do in snazziness for now (I suppose). That's not strictly true, they're the ones for my flat, overpronating feet, but they are nicer than their usual boring shoes

After crazily busy weekend of BMF in the beautiful sunshine and running to the river in the heat with a trip to Bexleyheath thrown in, going back to work was a relief!

We had a good 4 mile run yesterday around the park - 5pm and the animals were already tucked up in bed - so yet more disappointment. We did see 2 robins, but it's not quite the same.

I've realised the food recommendations have been a little lacking - we've been pretty good at work about not going out for food, but we did go to the Thai truck on Friday (on Goodge Place) they do a very good green curry. Also at the Globe on Saturday had a very good brownie and the Spanish Bar off Oxford Street do a good pint of San Miguel (just the one and we were celebrating)

So it's only a few days until the Hose Half. My running number is back up at my parents - number 9!! Going to approach this one as more of a training run than a race, trying to beat my 2 hours is scaring me, so will just see how it goes on the day - although the incentive of getting round so I can go home and eat my Easter eggs may prove too much........

Friday 3 April 2009

A mixed day

My Nike+ died this morning

When it tells you the battery is running low, you can do a half marathon, 4 miles and then a little bit more and it dies........ the little bit more was the start of my run to work this morning. I hate running first thing, but needs must as a busy today and I'm out this evening

Had a good run in wearing my new pink Nike top - 6.69 miles according to http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2693569 but the top of Primrose Hill looked down onto a mist covered City and as I ran past the Zoo all the animals were still in bed!

Got to work, showered and went to collect the post only to discover Nike had sent another top - long sleeves and boring white this time, but sadly too small for me..... Clare - owner of chickens, spotter of Griff Rhys Jones' dog (I spotted Griff, she was distracted by the dog!) and lunchtime runner - has adopted it as hers - may take a photo next time we go out.......

No BMF last night as it was a Relay committee meeting - we've raised over £1000 so far, so only another £69,000 to go to match last year's total!!

Please, if you can make a donation, go here and pop your details in

http://www.donatetomyrelay.org/emmarossruns

It's looking a bit empty right now

thanks emma

Finally feeling human again

Hi

Today is the first day since Sunday that I'm feeling full of beans and raring to go - probably since it's a rest day - but also as I've never run so hard in a race before in my life - never really believed I could do it!

Had a great evening at BMF last night, despite the aching legs and arms, managed to run around, get bruised knees (again) and a little bit muddy!!

Going to have to run to work tomorrow as I've got a Relay meeting in the evening - takes some coordination on my part as I need to remember to bring clothes into work the day before so I don't have to carry everything with me as I run. Think it will be over to Primrose Hill via Kentish Town, through Regents Park and the long way round to work.

Have also discovered I can create my own Relay fundraising page........
http://www.donatetomyrelay.org/emmarossruns
It links into our B team page, but means I can update it and you get a message from me when you donate some money - give it a try and see what it says!!!!

Just a quickie after the marathon post of yesterday.......

I woke today with only minor aches, sadly these have not got any better as the day's gone on!!

Thought I'd be good and do a recovery run today, so went and ran with the Nike Town lot - 4 miles around Regents Park. Got to see some of the crazy barriers that are going up for the G20 - massive things

Was amazed that despite my legs feeling so tired I still ran at the same pace as yesterday - I thin it must be some kind of muscle memory keeping them going!!

Even better I got back to the store to discover they were giving away T shirts for the Girls vs Boys challenge that's currently going on - they're an amazing shade of pink that doesn't really come across in the photos - but you should look out for us girls - we're a fearsome sight when we're together!

Heading to bed with aching legs - fingers crossed they're fixed for tomorrow night's BMF.....

How proud am I of me??

So I woke up at 6.30am to what looked to be a very promising day - the sun was out, but there was frost on the roofs on the opposite side of the road, so it was pretty chilly

After a quick breakfast of muesli and yogurt I finally decided on long legs and short and long sleeves and headed off to the train - Finsbury Park to Kings Cross and on to Paddington - could spot my fellow runners as I got to Kings Cross by their baggage labels and as we arrived in Paddington we all realised our train was delayed - bit of a worry as it was the last one we were meant to catch to guarantee getting the shuttle bus from Reading station. Thankfully there was another train running a few minutes later so we all hopped on that, many of us with the wrong tickets, stood for the 30minute journey, but all fairly certain there was no way they were going to check tickets - and we were right, got to Reading 10minutes early and made the buses without any worry - a good sign I thought

I've never been to Reading before and the bus journey didn't necessarily take us on the most scenic of routes, but it got us to the Madejski Stadium in plenty of time - time enough to use the proper loos in the stadium, go to the lucozade stand to get my pace band and an extra bottle of lucozade to keep me going. Then the next dilemma - time to drop my bag - what to wear - just as I was going to keep my long sleeves on the sun appeared and so off came the long sleeves and on went the bin bag instead!! I put my bag in before I had time to change my mind and headed off to queue for the portaloos...... less said about those the better, and it was time to head to the start

It was at this point that I realised for the first time in a race I was not in the last wave of runners to leave - I was second to last - even more exciting was that my predicted time (around 2 hours) took me to the front of the wave - so close to being second from the front!!

There were pacesetters at 5 minute intervals, I put myself in front of the 2 hour pace setter in the hope that I would stay in front of him all the way to the end.....

And we were off - took 10 minutes to get over the line - was also at this point that my Nike+ announced it's battery was getting low - but was too late to worry about that then.

The race itself is a bit of a blur - I needed a wee from the moment I crossed the line, but it was a beautifully sunny day and the miles seemed to race by. A few mean hills, an amazing band of drummers at 6miles as we went under an underpass and headed up into Reading town centre -I'd missed the loos at the first drinks station, but saw them at the second - after a very welcome pitstop carried on with renewed energy! Then it was time to run through the University campus - again very pretty - and before I knew it we were at 10miles - only 3 to go and the big wind turbine by the stadium came into view

The last 3.1 miles were a bit of a slog - a long straight road up toward the stadium followed by a cruel out and back section where I spotted the 2 hour pace setter - they must have gone past while I was in the loo 6 miles earlier!! This spurred me on the last mile, I caught up and over took them way before the stadium, at this point I was fairly sure I'd break the 2 hour target I'd set myself, but didn't trust myself and wondered if he was doing a bad job.....

The last 100yds were in the stadium - I could see the clock and knew we'd taken 10minutes to cross the start line - in theory I had about 10 seconds to cross the line - I counted them down in my head (or maybe out loud) as I ran towards it - in true professional style I stopped my watch as I crossed the line only to realise I'd crossed the line well under the 2 hours (well, with plenty of seconds to spare!) At this point I turned into a bit of a sobbing wreck causing a lovely man to check if I was ok and having explained the cause of the tears discovered he too had just beaten the 2hours for the first time. We both chatted and stretched together, congratulated each other again and headed out of the stadium and towards the silver blankets.

It was here I got a tap on the back and discovered a fellow member of Finsbury Park BMF (another Emma) had run the race too, we had a quick chat, a very welcome hug and she headed back to her family.

Then it was time to go and get my fab medal, goodie bag (why do they give you tea bags??) and head back to get my bag.

After donning a few more layers I hopped on the bus back to the station and had what seemed a weird experience of going back over some of the route but with it looking like the run had never existed, the route cleared of us runners, all the spectators and the bottles we'd left lying all over the place.

Back in the city centre I found the coffee shops I'd spotted just after the 6 mile mark and settled down for a coffee and a great slice of cake with a seat by the window in the sunshine - what a way to spend a Sunday afternoon!!

The journey home was uneventful. Could spot the runners this time by their slightly aching gait - although the medals were more of a giveaway!!

Was tucked up in bed by a respectable 10pm - absolutely shattered and very happy - it was a great day!

The final lap of the Relay For Life in Harrow last year was walked to the song Proud

The first line of the chorus is ......

What have you done today to make you feel proud?

Today I'd have to say running the race in less than 2 hours - to me it's always been the time that a 'good' runner would run a half marathon in. I was really proud when my friend Ewan managed to break it last year in Birmingham and now I've done it - does this mean that I'm finally a proper runner? I'm still not sure - finishing the marathon last year didn't persuade me I was, maybe after all the runs this year I might finally be convinced!!

It's nearly time.....

So, in 12 hours I'll be running!!

Still not quite decided what to wear - long or 3/4 length leggings? long and/or short sleeves? We'll see what it looks like in the morning....hopefully blue sky.... but as my running vest from CRUK hasn't arrived, I'm going to be in my Hearing Dogs for Deaf People vest - I ran the last Edinburgh marathon for them and my friend Clare saw one of the dogs on her train on Friday so thought at least I could raise some awareness for them on the way round - those dogs are amazing things

Had a great day out and about in London - went to the Globe theatre this morning to learn all about Romeo and Juliet and As You Like It and after a nice walk in the rain/sun/hail along the river I finally went to the Natural History Museum to see the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition (as ever it's amazing, closing soon, so you should go if you can).

I've not really been in the city at the weekend for ages and had forgotten what's it's like at the weekend - full of tourists looking at maps. Obviously I no longer class myself as a tourist now I've been here a year..... a sure sign appeared when I was last in Brum stood on a train waiting for the doors to open - I'd forgotten all about the quaint notion of having to press a button to open the train doors......

Any way, have had my last meal of pasta with a healthy dollop of pesto, have laid out all the clothing options for the morning, have changed my clocks, set my alarm (for a horrifying 6.30am - that's allowing for the clocks changing) so I guess all that's left now is to get some sleep!

Aching shoulders and a London moment

I'm suffering today after last night's BMF - carrying the medicine ball has certainly done it's job.... hopefully that will all have sorted itself by Sunday

Had a great day other than that - met my friend Jo for lunch at Borough Market - she has a proper job in the city, so I got to walk across London Bridge and feel like a proper Londoner amongst the suits - we had amazing falafel(?) and really yummy chocolate biscuit thing for pudding - everyone should go!!

Lots of pasta for dinner this evening, lots of water drunk, lucozade bought at Tesco on the way home, so almost set

Still not sure what time I need to leave the house on Sunday morning, but as my train is just before 8am at Paddington and the clocks go forward an hour it's not going to be good news when I look it up tomorrow is it?

Thanks go today to Erika for her support - she's going to shake a bucket at the Ideal Home Exhibition for the B Team tomorrow - hope you have a good day!!

I've never seen the Monument uncovered before!

And I've run to London Bridge before and underneath (I think) it but never been over it until today

Thursday - more BMF

So, today was my last day of exercise before Sunday, and was probably our last night of exercising in the dark before the clocks change on Sunday morning and the evenings get lighter.

Got to hang out with my favorite fellow red Peter - we cheer each other on when the going gets tough, have the same terrible sense of humor and, as he's slightly faster than me, makes me work all the harder!

We had a brilliant class, lots of running, medicine balls, piggy backs, leopard crawling through the wet grass and then the best moment of all, lying down under the stars and stretching - there were loads out tonight - I'm going to miss them now it's going to be light (am I really wishing that the nights were getting darker already??)

On the way home I saw the fox that lives by the railway line - he's so unbothered by humans you can stand and watch him for ages and he just watches you back - really lovely thing

3 more sleeps until Reading - big thanks to Nicky and Andrew for the sponsorship from all the B team x

Almost forgot - ordered some new trainers today - they're beautiful - will show you a picture when they arrive!

Disappointment and some major excitement

So the other 2 runs I wanted to do this year - the Royal Parks and Birmingham Half are both on the same day this year - 11th October

As we ran the first ever Birmingham Half last year we (me and my Brum friends) have decided to run that again - I want to try and run every one of them from now on

So will be missing out on the Royal Parks - hopefully one of them will change their date again next year!!!

On to the excitement (well, I'm excited!) - I'm getting my running vest sent out from CRUK and it comes with iron-on letters - just getting my name, but have already been told of more comedy things I should have asked for...... not sure if it will be here in time for Sunday, but fingers crossed

Really hoping to be able to raise lots of money for our Relay team and CRUK this year (www.donatetomyrelay.org/thebteam), but know it's not going to be easy. I have a friend who walks 4 marathons in 4 days in Holland - perhaps I should try that next year - up the ante a little......

Tuesday - BMF day!

So Tuesday was a much better day!

No coffee, no alcohol, but a whole new world of peanut butter based confectionery was discovered. Also, for today's food recommendation - Dough Master on Charlotte Street - rolled sandwiches - can highly recommend the Reuben

Tuesday nights are BMF nights - as it's been so dry recently, the mud has gone, so the hard ground is back - we spent a lot of time crawling between each others legs, so I now have mega bruised knees - will try take a photo later. Was a great class, it stayed light until the end for the first time this year which makes such a difference. No sign of the fox on the way home though...

Who you going to call????

So, my usual preparation for a race is to give up caffeine and alcohol for the week before - am terrible at drinking water, so removing the diuretics helps.

Sadly I failed miserably on Monday. Firstly the temptation of a coffee during clinic was too much. Then in the evening I met friends for pre-cinema drinks and we ended up in an amazing pub - the Salisbury on St. Martins's Lane - an old gin palace - the excitement of seeing Jane Krakowski from Ally McBeal was too much and a glass of wine was needed. This was swiftly followed with dinner in La Tasca - just opposite the pub and then a trip to the cinema to see the original version of Ghostbusters (not a remake as some have feared - although there are rumours of Ghostbusters 3)

Sunday 22 March 2009

One week to Reading!!!

One week to the first race of the year - how did this happen??

Training started up again properly not long after Christmas, but I spent the Winter months keeping fit in Finsbury Park doing British Military Fitness - 1 hour 3 times a week of rolling in the mud or bruising my knees on the frozen ground in snow, sleet and rain - so much fun - where else can you give people piggy backs, do wheelbarrows and forward (or as we called them now 'combat') rolls??

So this year I am hoping to raise money for Cancer Research UK and an event called Relay For Life. I helped organise 2 of these events last year - the first up in Birmingham which, in it's first year, we raised over £20,000. The second was in Harrow where, in it's 3rd year, we raised over a staggering £70,000

This year I have the very scary role of being co-chair for the Harrow Relay, but am really looking forward to being part of a team there as well - the B-team.

The event runs over 24hours, we do lots of fundraising in advance - where the running comes in - and on the day, as a team, we spend 24 hours walking around a running track, hopefully spending a wonderful day raising yet more money and raising cancer awareness.

http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/relay/venues/harrow/ - this is the link for the Relay itself, but also links through to more information about Relay For Life - they're all over the country, so if there's one near you, go take part!! Or you can turn up on the day as a spectator and see what it's all about

http://www.donatetomyrelay.org/thebteam - this is our team's fundraising page - it's looking very empty just now, but we're each hoping to raise over £200 each - we're also very aware that this year is going to be a difficult time for fundraising, but anything you can spare will be going towards a fantastic cause - it's a sad fact that 1 in 3 of us will be affected by cancer and CRUK are working very hard to making those odds better.

So on to my runs for this year.....

Planned so far are

Reading Half 29th March

Hose Half 12th April - Easter Sunday - so think of me when you're eating your eggs

Edinburgh Marathon 31st May - the biggy - hopefully will avoid the Wombles this year

Great North Run 20th September - the weekend after Relay

There's also the Birmingham Half and the Royal Parks Half later in the year

So just a quiet year really....... if you happen to be in/near any of these places please come and give me a cheer, or just meet up for lunch afterwards!

In fact after today's run I can highly recommend The Flask in Highgate and their very good burgers, and James can vouch for their roast beef......

Come back and check up on the training and maybe more food reviews!!
